Logistics in Flanders relies heavily on the ports of Antwerp, Zeebrugge and Ghent and on the distribution centres along the main motorways, where loading, unloading and transport continue day and night. Night work is legally defined as work between 20:00 and 06:00, and it is precisely in those hours that transshipment and transport companies often look for extra hands. A morning at a parcel depot
At a parcel depot the day starts long before the shops open. At five the trucks from the sorting centre arrive, and by nine the vans leave on their rounds. Click a moment to see what you do.
The trucks from the sorting centre are already at the dock when you arrive. You roll the cages of parcels inside and line them up at the sorting belt. Shifts that start before 6 am are only open to people aged 18 and over.
You scan each parcel and put it in the slot for the right delivery round. The scanner tells you the round number, so you don't need to know any streets. It feels slow at first, but after an hour you find the rhythm.
Every driver gets their parcels in the order of the route. Whatever is delivered first goes at the front of the van. Heavy boxes go at the bottom and envelopes in a crate by the door, so nobody has to search on the road.
As a driver's mate you ride along with the driver. They drive, you hop out and hand the parcels over at the door. If nobody is home, the parcel goes to a pick-up point or back in the van. In the weeks before the holidays a round often takes longer.
Parcels that weren't delivered get scanned back in and set aside for the next day. The empty van goes back to the car park or the charging point. Then your working day is over and you have the afternoon free.
Common roles: Loader and unloader (early morning), Delivery assistant (before the holidays), Parcel sorter (night), Van driver (september to december), Dispatch assistant (end of the day).

B licence and at least 18Parcels have to go out every working day. That means there is almost always work, which gives students and flexi-jobbers a few advantages.
A sorting shift often runs from five to half past eight. After that the whole day is still yours for classes or your other job.
From Black Friday to Christmas the number of parcels rises sharply. Depots then look for extra sorters and drivers' mates.
As a driver's mate you don't spend the whole day in a hall. Every day you pass through different streets and villages in your own area.
With a B driving licence you can drive a van up to 3.5 tonnes and do a round yourself. Unloading and sorting need no licence at all.

Transport companies and parcel depots often fall under joint committee 140 for transport, logistics service providers often under joint committee 226. Your contract states which committee applies.
You follow that committee's pay scale. For young student workers the minimum can be lower, depending on age.
You get at least the pay scale of the joint committee, plus flexi holiday pay. The depot may pay more.
Some companies pay a premium for night or early shifts. The hourly wage is shown with every shift in the app, so you know it before you respond.
