Education has been a sector in which flexi-jobs are possible under its own conditions since 2024. Beyond teaching itself, schools, colleges and universities mainly look for extra help with invigilation, reception and campus logistics around the exams in January and June, at the start of the academic year in September and during open days. A school day in childcare
At a school the work is split into short blocks: in the morning, over lunch and after the last bell. Most students take one or two of them. Click a moment to see what you do then.
The first children arrive while their parents leave for work. You note who is there, set out games and make sure everyone waits calmly until the bell rings. At half past eight you take the children to their line in the playground.
At lunchtime the children eat in a few sittings. You help the little ones open their lunchboxes, pour water and keep an eye on the tables. After lunch the children wipe the tables down together with you.
Then you are out in the playground. You keep an eye on who falls, settle an argument over the ball and know where the first aid kit is. A teacher or the person in charge of childcare is always nearby if something serious happens.
After the last bell older children go to the study room. You help with a maths exercise or test them on vocabulary, but you do not teach. Mostly you keep things calm, so everyone finishes their homework before their parents arrive.
By six the last children are picked up. You only let a child go with someone on the list and note the time they leave. Then you tidy the room, put the chairs on the tables and your day is done.
Common roles: Childcare assistant (early morning), Lunch supervisor (lunchtime), Homework helper (after the last bell), Classroom helper (during the school week), School trip helper (may and june), Camp leader (easter and summer holidays).
You look after schoolchildren before the first bell and after school, play games and serve an afternoon snack. You keep track of who is there and only hand a child over to someone on the list.
Certificate of good conductYou supervise the dining hall and the playground while the teachers take their break. You help toddlers open their lunch boxes and settle an argument over the ball.
No diploma neededDuring the Easter or summer holidays you lead a group of children for a whole day with games, sport and crafts. You make sure nobody gets lost and alert the person in charge if something happens.
A youth work animator certificate is a plusAfter the last bell you help children finish their homework in study hall and test them on vocabulary. You keep things calm, but you do not teach.
No teaching diploma neededSchools and childcare services look for people for short moments at fixed times. That fits around a class timetable or a part-time job.
Lunchtime supervision or an evening in childcare only takes a few hours. You know in advance which days you are expected.
During the Easter and summer holidays sports camps and playground schemes run. Organisers then look for leaders for full days or a whole week.

Every town has schools and after-school care. You work close to home or your student room, often with the same group of children.
You will not find an amount here, because it depends on the organisation and is indexed. Here are the rules that set your pay.
Private childcare usually falls under JC 331, a playground scheme or youth organisation often under JC 329.01. A municipal school or childcare service uses the municipality's pay scales.
You get the pay scale that applies to that organisation. As a young student worker your minimum can be lower, depending on your age and the committee.
You get at least the sector minimum wage, plus flexi holiday pay. In Flemish childcare, flexi work may be at most 20 percent of all hours worked at an employer, so flexi shifts are limited there.
