Which care tasks can I perform without a diploma?

Without a care diploma you stay with support tasks such as serving meals, keeping residents company, reception and internal logistics. Nursing acts and personal care are reserved for recognised care providers, and institutions apply that distinction strictly. Every shift states which tasks are involved, so you only respond to what you are allowed to do.

Can I do a flexi-job in a residential care home?

Since 2023 care institutions have been allowed to deploy flexi-jobbers, provided it does not involve care functions. Your main job elsewhere must be at least four fifths for that, unless you are retired. Pensioners with experience in the sector are often welcome in care homes for reception and support.

When do care institutions need extra hands?

Weekends, public holidays and school holidays are the moments when the permanent team is thinner and support is requested. In the winter months, when flu is going around, demand rises again. Meal shifts are short and fall around midday and early evening, which makes them suitable to combine with another job.

What is expected of me on a first care shift?

A valid identity card, clean clothing without jewellery and respect for the privacy of residents and patients. Some institutions ask for an extract from the criminal record or a short briefing on hygiene and fire safety before you start. Arrive a quarter of an hour early, so the person in charge can show you the ward and the routines.

How quickly can I start in care?
