Flexi-job and unemployment benefits: can you combine them in 2026?

Published: January 2026 • 6 min read • By AnyShift

Are you unemployed and want to earn extra income with a flexi-job? You can, but under strict conditions. In this article we explain when you may take on a flexi-job as an unemployed person and what to watch out for.

Conditions for the unemployed

As a fully unemployed person you may carry out a flexi-job, but you must have worked recently. The main rule: you must have worked at least 4/5ths (full-time) no more than 9 months ago.

In concrete terms: Do you want to do a flexi-job in January 2026? Then you must have worked at least 4/5ths in April, May and June 2025 with another employer.

Fully unemployed vs partially unemployed

The rules differ depending on your situation:

  • Fully unemployed: you may do a flexi-job, but you lose your benefit for every day that you work
  • Partially unemployed: you may be able to apply for an income guarantee benefit (IGU) and do a flexi-job alongside it
  • Temporarily unemployed: you may simply carry out your flexi-job during the unemployment days

How much can you earn on the side?

In 2026 you may earn up to EUR 18,000 tax-free on the side with flexi-jobs. Your gross pay equals your net pay.

Aspect Amount / Info
Tax-free ceiling EUR 18,000 per year
Tax on flexi-pay 0% (under the ceiling)
Social contributions None (the employer pays 28%)
Social rights Yes (pension, holidays, illness)

Please note: for every day that you do a flexi-job, you lose your unemployment benefit for that day. You cannot receive both a benefit and flexi-pay on the same day.

Reporting obligation and control card

Since 2025 the paper control card has been abolished. You now have to report your working days electronically via the eC3.2 app or the social security portal.

What do you have to declare?

  • Every day that you carry out a flexi-job
  • Which days you were available for the labour market
  • Other activities that affect your benefit
Important: do you forget to declare working days? Then you risk having to repay benefits received unjustly and an RVA sanction.

Practical tips

1. Check the T-3 condition

Verify whether you were still working 4/5ths 9 months ago. If not, you cannot yet do a flexi-job.

2. Declare your working days immediately

Use the eC3.2 app right after your shift. That way you forget nothing and avoid problems.

3. Keep actively looking for work

A flexi-job does not release you from your obligation to look for work. The RVA monitors your search behaviour.

4. Get in touch when in doubt

Questions about your situation? Contact your trade union or the RVA for personal advice.
