Flexi-job or student job on the weekend?
Did you know that no fewer than 36% of young people aged 14 to 25 in Flanders had a second job during the school year? That is double the figure since 2006. And it does not stop there: in 2024, more than three quarters of Flemish students had a student job, of which roughly half even worked during the school year.
Employers are increasingly relying on students too. Figures from 2024 show that more than a third (34.4%) of Belgian employers had students on their payroll.
In the past, students mainly worked in the summer, but nowadays they are active throughout the entire academic year. On average, students in Belgium worked around 981 hours per year.
That is quite a lot, and it makes clear how important weekend work has become. Whether you are a student or already have a permanent job: picking up extra work on the weekend is the most normal thing in the world today. But how do you quickly find a shift that truly suits you?
Time to discover AnyShift.
What is the difference between a student job and a flexi-job?
Not everyone is simply allowed to take on a student job or a flexi-job. Below we briefly explain what the difference is, and which option suits you best.
Student job
A student job is intended for young people who are officially enrolled in a recognised educational institution (such as secondary school, a university college or a university).
What you need to know:
- You must be at least 15 or 16 years old (depending on your level of education).
- Studying must be your main activity.
- You must work under a student contract.
- From 2025, you may work 650 hours per year at a favourable rate.
- You pay lower social security contributions.
Ideal for weekend work, because you choose when you work yourself, as long as you stay within your hours.
Flexi-job
A flexi-job is for people who already work at least 4/5ths in another job, or for pensioners.
What are the advantages:
- You earn extra income tax-free.
- Your employer pays lower social security contributions.
- In high demand in sectors such as hospitality, retail, cleaning and events.
Note: as a student you usually do not qualify for a flexi-job, unless you also meet that 4/5ths condition (which is rarely the case for full-time students).
Why weekend work is so convenient
Weekend jobs are popular for a reason:
- You plan work around your classes and hobbies.
- You earn extra without neglecting your studies.
- You gain experience that will come in handy on your CV later on.
- You meet new people and build a network.
Whether you want to earn a bit of extra pocket money or are saving for a holiday: weekend work is the perfect way to earn money in a flexible way.
