What are the rules for a flexi-job in 2025?
It is a frequently asked question: “Am I allowed to do a flexi-job as a student?”
The terms student job and flexi-job are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same. In this blog we explain clearly what the difference is, and whether you, as a student, qualify for a flexi-job.
What is a student job?
A student job is intended for young people who study full-time and want to earn extra income during the year or in the summer. You may work a maximum of 600 hours per calendar year at reduced social security contributions. This is called the student status.

What is a flexi-job?
A flexi-job is a special status that allows you to work extra alongside a main job or pension, without paying taxes on your income.
Conditions in 2025:
- You already work at least 4/5 with another employer, or
- You are officially retired
- You work in a sector where flexi-jobs are legally permitted, such as hospitality, retail, logistics, cleaning and events
Can you do a flexi-job as a student?
The short answer: usually not.
If you are a full-time student and have no other main job, then you may not do a flexi-job.
There is one exception:
If, alongside your studies, you work at least 4/5 with another employer and meet the flexi-job conditions, then it is allowed in theory. But that rarely happens. For students, a student job remains the best and safest choice.
What if you graduate?
From the moment you are no longer studying and start working somewhere as a 4/5 employee, you may qualify for a flexi-job. This can be an interesting way to earn extra income in a tax-advantaged way.

Frequently asked questions
Is a flexi-job better than a student job?
Not for students. Student jobs offer reduced RSZ rates and fit your status better.
Can I combine a student job and a flexi-job?
In principle no, unless you meet the conditions for both statuses – which rarely happens.
