Over-50s and Pensioners: Earning Extra with Flexi-Jobs in 2026
In this article
The days when you sat still after turning 50 or after retiring are over. More and more Flemish people are choosing to stay active and earn extra through a flexi-job. And in 2026 that is more attractive than ever. Whether you are 55 and want to supplement your permanent job, or you are already enjoying your pension and want to put in a few more hours: the possibilities are plentiful.
In this article we explain what the rules are, how much you may earn extra, and why employers like working with over-50s and pensioners. That way you know exactly where you stand.
Why do over-50s and pensioners choose a flexi-job?
The reasons to keep working later in life are varied. For some it is purely about the financial picture: earning a little extra on top of your pension or your regular wage. For others it is a way to stay among people, keep structure in the week, or keep certain skills sharp.
A flexi-job offers precisely the flexibility you need later in life. You decide for yourself when you work, how many hours you put in, and in which sector. There is no obligation to work the same hours every week. That makes it perfectly combinable with other activities, whether that is looking after the grandchildren, travelling, or simply enjoying your free time.
The rules for pensioners in 2026
The rules around flexi-jobs for pensioners depend on your specific situation. There are two groups we need to distinguish.
Legally retired: earn extra without limit
Are you at least 66 years old or did you have a career of 45 years when your pension started? Then you may earn extra without limit through a flexi-job. There is no ceiling, no tax, and no social security contributions. Your gross wage is immediately your net wage.
This makes a flexi-job particularly attractive for pensioners who are still fit enough to work. Whether you want to work 20 hours a week or only a few hours, anything is possible. Your pension is not reduced, no matter how much you earn extra.
Early retirees: watch the limit of 8,121 euros
Have you taken early retirement and not yet reached the legal pension age? Then a limit does apply. In 2026 you may earn a maximum of 8,121 euros per year through flexi-jobs without your pension being reduced.
That amount may seem limited, but it comes down to an average of 677 euros per month. At the current flexi-wage in hospitality of 12.53 euros net per hour, you can work about 50 hours per month. That is more than enough to get to work 1 to 2 days a week.
Do you earn more than 8,121 euros? Then your pension is reduced in proportion to the amount by which you exceed the limit. So it pays to keep good track of how much you have already earned.
Waiting period at the start
There is one more important rule for pensioners who want to start with a flexi-job. If you worked at least 4/5 in the nine months before your pension, you may get to work straight away. Did you work less? Then you have to wait until you have been retired for at least one full quarter.
Have you been retired for longer than three months? Then this rule no longer applies and you can start immediately.
The rules for over-50s with a permanent job
Even if you are not yet retired but have already passed 50, you can earn extra through a flexi-job. The condition is that you work at least 4/5 with another employer. So you may not do a flexi-job with your own employer or an affiliated company.
In 2026 the tax ceiling for flexi-jobs has been raised to 18,000 euros per year. That means you can put in quite a few hours without paying tax on them. Above this amount your income is taxed, but you do not automatically fall into a higher tax bracket for your regular wage as a result.
Major change: flexi-jobs in all sectors from April 2026
Until now, flexi-jobs were mainly possible in hospitality, retail and a few other sectors. But from 1 April 2026 that changes. The federal government has decided to open up flexi-jobs to all sectors, unless a sector explicitly chooses an opt-out.
That means that, as an over-50 or pensioner, you will soon be able to earn extra in sectors where that was not possible before. Think of administration, the care sector, logistics, or even the cultural sector. The choice is becoming much broader.

Why employers like working with over-50s and pensioners
Employers increasingly see the value of older workers. And that is not without reason. Over-50s and pensioners bring qualities that are hard to find in younger candidates.
- Experience and expertise: Anyone who has worked for 30 or 40 years has already been through plenty of situations and knows how things should be handled.
- Reliability: Older workers turn up on time, do not call in sick on a whim, and take their work seriously. For employers who need someone quickly, that is important.
- Social skills: In sectors where customer contact is important, such as hospitality and retail, over-50s are often an added value. They can deal with different types of customers and keep their cool more easily in busy situations.
- Stability: Older workers are often not looking for the next step in their career. They like to do their job well without ambition to climb higher, which in a flexi-job is exactly the right attitude.
How do you start with a flexi-job as an over-50 or pensioner?
The step towards a flexi-job is simpler than you might think. Through apps such as AnyShift you can quickly find vacancies that suit your availability and interests. You create a profile, indicate when you are available, and apply for jobs that appeal to you.
Many employers are looking for people who can start at short notice. As an over-50 or pensioner you often have the advantage that you are not tied to a fixed school timetable or fixed working hours elsewhere. That flexibility is appreciated.
