A student job or flexi-job in cleaning happens when the building is empty: before 8 am or after 5 pm. Offices and shops in Flanders are cleaned every week, also outside the holidays. As a student those hours count towards your 650 hours a year. A collective agreement of 2 July 2026 limits flexi-jobs in cleaning (JC 121) to (early) retirees, for at most 10 percent of the hours worked per employer. It applies once the royal decree is published in the Official Gazette.
An evening round in cleaning
Offices are cleaned once everyone has gone home. An evening round often runs from half past five to half past nine, in a fixed order: desks, kitchens, toilets and floors. Click a moment to see what it looks like.
You sign in at reception or with security and get a badge or keys. In the storeroom you set up your trolley with colour-coded cloths, buckets and the building's own products. The person in charge tells you which floors are yours.
You empty the bins and paper bins and wipe the desks with a damp cloth. Papers and laptops stay exactly where they are. You work floor by floor, so you do not skip anything. Full rubbish bags are tied up and left by the lift.
In the kitchenettes you empty the dishwasher, clean the counter and the coffee machine and refill paper and soap. In the meeting rooms you straighten the chairs and wipe the tables and the whiteboard. Leftover cups go back to the kitchen.
For the toilets you use cloths in their own colour and wear gloves. You descale the washbasins, clean the toilets and refill paper and hand soap. That way a toilet cloth never ends up on a desk.
Last of all you vacuum the carpets and mop the corridors with a flat mop. You put your trolley away, switch off the lights and set the alarm if you are asked to. At half past nine your round is done.
Common roles: Office cleaner (early or evenings), Housekeeper (11:00 to 15:00), Event cleaner (night and morning after), Shop cleaner (before 10 am), Washroom attendant (busy weekends).

If you work for a cleaning company, your pay follows the scale of joint committee 121 for cleaning. The scale depends on your role and the type of building.
In JC 121 this will only be possible as an (early) retiree once the royal decree of 2 October 2026 is published in the Official Gazette. You get at least the sector wage for your role, with flexi holiday pay on top.
Work at night, on Sundays or on a public holiday can come with a supplement. That depends on the pay scale and the assignment.
