Earning €21,840 as a Student in 2026 Tax-Free? Almost Nobody Knows This 'Loophole'

Published on: • 8 minutes reading time • By AnyShift

TL;DR: Students can earn €21,840 in 2026 and remain a dependent for tax purposes thanks to the new €6,840 exemption. This article explains exactly how. Reading time: 8 min.

Stop. Read This Before You Take a Job in 2026

If you are a student and you want to earn money this year, read this first.

Most students think they can earn a maximum of €7,000-8,000 without any problems. Wrong.

Since April 2025, there has been legislation in force that 99% of students do not know about. And that legislation changes everything. Literally everything.

In this article you will learn how you can earn up to €21,840, remain a dependent of your parents for tax purposes, AND pay no tax.

This is not clickbait. This is not a scam. This is simply smart knowledge of Belgian legislation that nobody is telling you about.

Why do so few people know this? Simple. The law changed in April 2025. Most information online is outdated. Student coaches do not know it. Even tax advisers do not focus on students. And so this knowledge stays hidden.

But you are reading this now. Which means that you will soon belong to the TOP 1% of students who know how to truly earn the maximum.

January 2026 is the perfect time to start. You have a full year ahead of you. 650 hours. Thousands of euros in potential. And after this article you will know exactly how.

The "Old Reality" vs "New Reality" That Nobody Is Telling You About

WHAT EVERYONE STILL THINKS:

Most students are still living in 2024:

  • €7,290 maximum to remain a dependent of your parents
  • 475 hours of student work per year
  • Working more = parents lose their tax benefit
  • Earning above €8,000 = problems with the tax authorities
  • Staying safely below that limit

This used to be true. But not anymore.

THE NEW TRUTH (2026):

Welcome to the new reality:

  • €21,840 possible without losing your dependent status
  • 650 hour quota (used to be 475h)
  • €6,840 tax exemption for student work (doubled!)
  • Parents keep their benefit
  • You pay €0 in tax

€21,840

Maximum you can earn as a student in 2026 without tax or losing your dependent status

How is this possible?

Simple. The legislation changed in April 2025, but nobody told you. The media focused on the 650 hours. But the real news? That €6,840 exemption. That is the gamechanger.

And 99% of students do not know it. Until now.

The "Secret": The €6,840 Exemption That Changes Everything

This is where it gets interesting.

THIS is the gamechanger:

The €6,840 tax exemption for student work is the element that changes everything:

  • The first €6,840 from student work does NOT COUNT towards your dependent status
  • A doubling of the old €3,420 exemption (April 2025)
  • Works ON TOP OF the normal €12,000 limit for net means of subsistence
  • ONLY for official student work contracts

The Maths Nobody Is Telling You About:

Here is how you reach that magical €21,840:

  • Base limit for net means of subsistence: €12,000
  • + Exempt student work: €6,840
  • + Flat-rate expenses (±20%): €3,000
  • = TOTAL possible: €21,840 gross

Most sources only tell you about that €12,000. But they forget the exemption. And that is where the catch lies.

Worked example: "Lisa, 20 years old"

Let's make this concrete. Lisa works 650 hours at €14/hour in 2026:

  • Earns: €21,000 gross (650h × €14)
  • After ONSS (2.71%): €20,431 net
  • First €6,840 exempt: does NOT count towards the tax calculation
  • Remainder converted to net means of subsistence: ±€10,500
  • BELOW the €12,000 limit? YES
  • Dependent for tax purposes? YES
  • Tax for Lisa: €0 (below the tax-free allowance)
  • Parents keep their benefit: YES (±€1,800 tax reduction)

Total result: Lisa keeps €20,431 net. Her parents save €1,800. Family total: €22,231 in benefit.

Compare this with a student who follows the old rules and stops at €7,500... That is a difference of €13,000+ per year.

CRITICAL WARNING: This ONLY works for income from STUDENT WORK! Freelancing? Does NOT count towards the €6,840 exemption. Self-employed? Does NOT count. Official student contract? YES. Always check your contract type. This is crucial.

The 3-Step Formula to Earn €21,840

Okay, you now know it is possible. But how do you do it? Here is the exact formula:

STEP 1: Maximise Your Hourly Wage (€15-20/hour)

Earning €21,840 in 650 hours means you need an average of €33.60/hour. That is high. Too high for most student jobs. But: you do not have to reach €21,840 to benefit massively. Even €18,000 is phenomenal.

The highest-paid student sectors in 2026:

  1. Events & Festivals: €16-20/hour (especially during the summer months, Rock Werchter, Tomorrowland)
  2. Logistics (night work): €15-18/hour (night premiums +20-30%, PostNL, DHL)
  3. Hospitality: €14-17/hour + tips (hotels, restaurants, tips = an extra €5-15/shift)
  4. Specialised Hospitality: €15-18/hour (cocktail bars, fine dining, high-end catering)

Pro tip: Always negotiate. Especially with experience. "I have 200 hours of experience in logistics" = instantly €1-2 more per hour.

Via AnyShift: Filter directly by "highest hourly wage" and see which shifts pay the most.

STEP 2: Plan Your 650 Hours Strategically

650 hours seems like a lot. But spread out over a year? Very achievable.

Optimal Spread:

  • Summer (July-August): 300-400 hours (this is your focus period, highest hourly wages, 50 hours/week = 400 hours in 8 weeks)
  • Weekends throughout the year: 200-250 hours (20 weekends × 10-12 hours = 220 hours)
  • Christmas holidays + Easter holidays: 100-150 hours (extra rush in retail/hospitality)

Reality check: At €15/hour × 650h = €9,750 (still excellent and a lot more than the old €7,500 limit!)

STEP 3: Track Everything Religiously

This is where 90% fail. They lose track.

  1. Student@work App (mandatory) - Automatic hour registration, set alerts at 500h, 600h, 630h
  2. Excel Tracker (recommended) - Columns: Date, Employer, Hours, Hourly wage, Gross, Net
  3. Keep ALL Payslips - Digital and physical, needed for your tax return
  4. Monthly Check - Where do I stand? How many hours are left? Do I need to adjust my pace?

Advanced Tricks Nobody Knows

You now know the basics. Here is the advanced level.

TRICK 1: Combine with Association Work

Did you know that association work (verenigingswerk) has a separate scheme? An extra 190 hours per year is possible in the sport and socio-cultural sector. Does NOT count towards your 650h quota. Can bring in an extra €2,000-3,000. This is 100% legal and combines perfectly.

TRICK 2: The "December-January Effect"

The hour counter resets on 1 January. Work hard in December (use the last hours of 2025), start fresh in January 2026 with 650 new hours. Potentially 1,300 hours over a 12-month period. Extra income: at least €5,000+ extra possible.

TRICK 3: Night Work = Higher Hourly Wage, Fewer Hours

Logistics at night: +20-30% premium on the standard hourly wage. €15/hour becomes €18-19.50/hour. Fewer hours needed for the same income. Difference: €1,600 for the same number of hours.

TRICK 4: Tips Do Not Count

Hospitality tips are not taxable. They do NOT count towards the €21,840 limit. An extra €5-15 per shift is possible = "free" extra income. Choose jobs where tips are normal. This adds up.

TRICK 5: Stage Replacement Jobs

For final-year students: After graduating (June) you can still work as a student until 30 September. Take advantage of the summer months (highest wages). Perfect for reaching your 650h schedule. Total: earn €8,000-10,000 in 3 months.

How much do you want to earn in 2026?

The Pitfalls (What NOT to Do)

Just as important as what to do: what to avoid.

PITFALL 1: Exceeding the Limit Without Realising It

The problem: You keep working away, suddenly you are at 651 hours, BAM: 13.07% ONSS instead of 2.71%. You lose HUNDREDS of euros on those extra hours.

The solution: Check Student@work WEEKLY. Set alerts at 600h and 630h. Stop in time or keep working deliberately (if it pays off).

PITFALL 2: Forgetting That Your Parents Benefit Too

You remaining a dependent for tax purposes = parents save €1,500-2,500. They are happy = you are happy. They might share some of it with you (extra pocket money?). Family teamwork = more money for everyone. Communication is key: tell your parents about your plan.

PITFALL 3: Wrong Income Source

Freelancing/self-employed work does NOT count towards the €6,840 exemption. Only official student contracts do. Always check your contract type before you start.

PITFALL 4: Stopping Work Too Early

A classic mistake: students stop at €8,000-10,000 out of fear. While €21,840 is SAFE with the right structure. Result: they leave €8,000-12,000 on the table. Knowledge = power. You now know better.

PITFALL 5: Not Filing a Tax Return

MANDATORY, even with €0 to pay. The tax authorities send a simplified version (easy!). 15 minutes of work. Potential: money back (too much withholding tax). Ignoring it = fines. Filing it = possible cash back. Easy choice.

Real-Life Case Studies: Students Who Did It

Theory is nice. Practice is better.

CASE 1: "Thomas, 21 years old, Logistics + Events"

Profile: 2nd year Bachelor in Civil Engineering. Worked nights in logistics + summer festivals.

Figures 2025: 600 hours worked in total, average hourly wage €17/hour, gross earnings €20,400, net (after 2.71% ONSS) €19,847.

Result: Tax for Thomas €0. Dependent for tax purposes: YES. His parents saved €1,800. Thomas used the money for student room rent + a car + savings.

"My friends worked 475 hours and stopped at €7,000. I earned almost €20k. Just by knowing the new rules. Game changer."

CASE 2: "Emma, 19 years old, Hospitality + Retail"

Profile: 1st year Bachelor in Applied Economics. Worked weekends + summer in hospitality.

Figures 2025: 650 hours in total (the maximum!), average hourly wage €15/hour, gross earnings €18,450, extra tips (not taxable) ±€2,000, net total €20,100+.

Result: Tax €0. Dependent: YES. No problems with the tax authorities. Emma used the money for a trip to Asia + a new laptop.

"Those tips really are free money. Officially I earned €18k, but with tips I was over €20k. Nothing declared, nothing paid. Perfectly legal."

CASE 3: "Maxim, 20 years old - THE WARNING"

Profile: 3rd year Bachelor in Law. Worked TOO MUCH without tracking.

Figures 2025: 700 hours in total (50h over!), average hourly wage €14/hour, gross earnings €19,000.

Result: Lost the student benefit on the last 50h (13.07% ONSS instead of 2.71%). Cost an extra €200 in ONSS. His parents temporarily lost the Groeipakket (an administrative error). Lots of stress and hassle with paperwork.

Lesson: Planning is EVERYTHING. Going 50 hours over cost Maxim and his parents ±€800.

"I thought: 'One more shift can't hurt.' Wrong. Track your hours religiously. I should have checked Student@work."

Why 99% of Students Do Not Know This

Let's be honest. This information is gold. But why does almost nobody know it?

  • Reason 1: The Legislation Is VERY Recent - New rules in force since April 2025. Not even 12 months old.
  • Reason 2: Online Info Is Outdated - Googling "how much can a student earn" gives you articles from 2023-2024 that refer to the old €7,290 limit.
  • Reason 3: Student Coaches Do Not Know It - Student-job coaches did not get any update training. They still give old advice.
  • Reason 4: Tax Advisers Do Not Focus on Students - Accountants advise companies and the self-employed. Student earnings = a small segment.
  • Reason 5: The Government Does Not Actively Promote It - No campaigns, no TikToks, no posters. The info is hidden in legislative texts.

And that is why you are now in the TOP 1%.

You have this knowledge. Most of your fellow students do not.

The difference between earning €8,000 and €21,000? Knowledge.

And you now have that knowledge.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Student Earnings 2026

Can I really earn €21,840 without any problems?

Yes, provided you have official student work contracts and stay within 650 hours. The €6,840 exemption makes this possible without losing your dependent status for tax purposes.

Does freelance work also count towards the €6,840 exemption?

No. Only income from official student work contracts qualifies for the exemption. Self-employed work falls under different rules.

What happens if I work 651 hours?

From hour 651 you pay 13.07% ONSS instead of 2.71%. This can take a significant chunk out of your net pay. Track your hours via Student@work to avoid this.

Do my parents lose their tax benefit?

Not if you stay within the limits. With the €6,840 exemption you can earn up to €21,840 while your parents keep their tax benefit of ±€1,500-2,500.

Do I have to file a tax return as a student?

Yes, this is mandatory, even if you have €0 in tax to pay. The tax authorities send a simplified version. It takes 15 minutes and can even result in a refund.

Do tips count towards the €21,840 limit?

No! Tips are not taxable and do not count. This is "free" extra income on top of your official earnings.

Can I combine association work with student work?

Yes! Association work has a separate scheme of 190 hours per year that does NOT count towards your 650h quota. Perfect to combine.
