In 2025, more than 627,000 students in Belgium have a student job. Whether you work in hospitality, retail or another sector, it is important to know how much you should earn at a minimum.

But what exactly is the minimum wage for a student job? And how much do you really keep net?

In this blog you will discover everything you need to know about the minimum wage in Belgium: from guidelines by age to sector pay scales. We answer questions such as:

  • What is the minimum wage for a student worker?
  • What does a 15-year-old or an 18-year-old earn per hour?
  • And how do you quickly find work through AnyShift, the app for student jobs in Belgium?

What is the minimum wage for a student job in Belgium?

The minimum wage depends on three factors:

  • your age
  • the type of work
  • the sector or collective labour agreement that applies to you

As a general guideline, the following applies in 2025:

For employees aged 16 or younger: 67% of the GMMI (€ 2,111.89) amounts to € 1,414.97 or € 8.59 per hour for a 38-hour week.

For employees aged 17: 73% of the GMMI (€ 2,111.89) amounts to € 1,541.68 or € 9.36 per hour for a 38-hour week.

For employees aged 18 and over: 100% of the GMMI (€ 2,111.89) comes to € 2,111.89 or € 12.85 per hour for a 38-hour week.

Since February 2025, the GMMI stands at € 2,111.89 and is indexed regularly, which means the amounts above may change over the course of the year.

Please note: these amounts may differ depending on the sector or collective labour agreement (CLA). For example, the hospitality sector uses its own pay scales, which can vary depending on the role, experience or time of day (evening or weekend work).

Net minimum wage: how much do you really keep?

As a student worker you pay fewer social security contributions than ordinary employees.

As a result, your net pay is often surprisingly close to your gross pay.

In 2025 you may earn up to €15,100.00 per year without paying taxes.

If you go above that, it may affect your tax return or your right to child benefit. If you earn more than the maximum amount for which you remain a dependant of your parents, they may have to pay extra taxes; in 2024 that threshold (after social security contributions) was € 12,422.50.

What are the best-paid student jobs in Belgium?

Not every student job pays the same. Some roles or sectors offer higher wages, especially for evening work or during peak periods.

A few well-paid student jobs:
  • Hospitality during weekends or events
  • Warehouse work (order picking, loading/unloading)
  • Promotional work (flyering, sampling)
  • Technical jobs or IT support for students with digital skills
